Carnfunnock Walled Garden

Carnfunnock Country Park’s Walled Garden was built in the 1840’s and occupies a total area of 0.61 hectares (1.5 acres).  It was originally the kitchen garden of Cairncastle Lodge, until purchased by Sir Thomas & Lady Dixon, who owned the neighbouring Cairndhu Estate.  In 1957 Lady Dixon sold it to Larne Borough Council and in the late 1980’s it was transformed into the modern and tranquil leisure garden you see today.

The beautiful grounds are themed to include a flower garden, butterfly garden, scented walkway, herbaceous border, heather garden, rock garden and water garden. Its protective high brick walls create a sheltered microclimate for growing a wide collection of plants from all over the world including eucalyptus, Australian bottle brush and the American foxglove tree.

The garden also boasts a shaded amphitheatre, a unique collection of sundials and distinctive wooden sculptures. It provides a wonderful setting for wedding / civil partnership ceremonies or photographs as well as summer band concerts, which annually take place on Sundays from June to August.  A hornbeam maze in the shape of Northern Ireland is located just outside the garden and there are also mature woodlands and varied parkland to explore at your leisure.

The Walled Garden and onsite public toilets are open all year round, from 9.00am to dusk, excluding Christmas Day and subject to ground conditions.  The nearby Coffee Shop is open from April to September.

Admission to the garden is free, however a parking charge applies from March to October.  Free access for Royal Horticultural Society members in July & August. Please telephone for details.
